Rich in history,  Hampstead most famous visitors have been George Washington, Black Beard, Steede Bonnett and Captain Kidd. George Washington was said to have passed through the area in 1791 and spent the night at the local tavern. A monument was placed at the site by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1925. Topsail Inlet was a known entry site to Topsail Sound and hide out for pirates like Black Beard, Steele Bonnett and Captain Kidd.
